Mustangs 8, Dragon Club 5

The New Haven Mustangs scored 5 third period goals to defeat Dragon Club 8-5 Wednesday night.

Forward Vanja Duric got the Mustangs on the board during a powerplay off and assist from defenseman Mike Acabbo at the 7:56 mark of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. DC responded with a goal from forward TJ Schatz with 2:25 left in the period to tie the game 1-1.

DC forward Karl Mauhs scored just under a minute into the second period to put his team ahead, but the Mustangs would fire back with 2 straight goals from forwards Nik Bakos and Ciro Longobardi to take a 3-2 lead. The next two goals would come from DC defenseman Fred Bianchi and Schatz who scored his second of the game to now put DC ahead 4-3 entering the third period.

Now trailing by one goal, the Mustangs came out in the third looking to tie the game and put an end to the DC offensive surge that started at the end of the second period. Mustang defenseman Jeremy Felt did just that as he found the back of the net after taking a pass from forward Nick Costanzo at the 8:54 mark.

The next 3 goals would all come from the Mustangs as Bakos added his second tally of the night and forward Dan Mauriello added a pair to give his team a 7-4 lead. Forward Matt Fallon added assists on 2 of the 3 goals.

Schatz would then scored his third of the game for DC to complete a hat-trick but this was the last goal Mustang goaltender Dan Ells would allow. Duric then added an empty net goal to complete the scoring at 8-5 in favor of the Mustangs.

Dan Ells made 39 saves for the Mustangs, and Jason Szerszen made 35 saves for Dragon Club.
